"I don't go to therapy to find out if I'm a freak,
I go and I find the one and only answer every week,
And when I talk about therapy, I know what people think,
That it only makes you selfish and in love with your shrink,
But, oh how I loved everybody else,
When I finally got to talk so much about myself."
Dar Williams, What do you Hear in These Sounds
For many people Counselling still has a stigma attached which suggests you must be ‘a bit mad’ to need to see a ‘shrink’. However, Counselling put simply is an opportunity to be with someone who is not a friend or family member and therefore has no agenda other than to listen objectively. Someone who is skilled, caring and trustworthy and able to offer a safe, confidential space to explore who you are as a person and help you uncover what is troubling you. Unlike family and friends, I will not be overwhelmed by your thoughts, emotions or behaviours. I make no judgements but treat my clients with respect and consideration.
Certain experiences in my life led me to question ‘why we are the way we are and why we do the things we do’. Through extensive Training and Personal Counselling, I have learnt what unique and clever ways we utilise to survive in this world despite difficult experiences.
My philosophy is to value each person for who they are and not to be influenced by medical labels or diagnoses. I offer each client the chance to tell their story and be really ‘heard’. I tailor my services to each individual rather than using a set format. We will work together and may try different approaches until we find the ‘key’ to unlock whatever is causing the problem or difficulty. We then consider alternative ways and available options.
It is always difficult to take the first step to something new and emotions and behaviours can seem complex and confusing. We will jointly decide how often we will work together and there is never an obligation to commit to certain quantities of sessions. Our work together is driven entirely by you the client and my role is to use my training to help challenge long held beliefs and empower you so you can see you have choices and can make positive changes in your life.
For Young People, good Counselling can be transformative for themselves as well as all the family. It can also prevent a lifetime of future problems as new skills can be learnt and issues can be worked out and better understood.
"Some people's lives seem to flow in a narrative; mine had many stops and starts. That's what Trauma does. It interrupts the plot… It just happens, and then life goes on. No one prepares you for it."
Jessica Stern, Denial: A Memoir of Terror
Subjects often brought to Counselling which I have worked with include;
Anxiety, Bereavement, Bullying, Depression, Low Self Esteem, Confidence issues, Panic attacks, Stress, Relationship and Family problems, Self-Harm, Suicidal thoughts, Eating Disorders, Addiction, Obsessive Compulsive Behaviours, Sexuality, Anger and Behaviour issues, Abuse and Trauma.
I work with Children, Young People and Adults as well as Couples. When working with children, as their language is that of play, I use Therapeutic Play and Creative methods as required. Due to the rural location of my practice, we have the option to work outdoors as well.
Sessions are usually an hour per week but can be longer as required. I am available weekdays, after school hours, early evenings and Saturdays as requested.
